Introduction

Maintaining a site that is "brand safe" is essential for attracting high-value advertisers. The Objectionable Content Filter uses an advanced scanning system to monitor every word on your site for language or topics that may violate Google AdSense terms of service or other ad network policies. When the system detects potentially non-compliant content, it flags the specific URLs and words so you can take corrective action before a formal policy violation occurs.

Overview

The filter is located in the Ezoic dashboard under Settings > Ad Restrictions > Objectionable Content.

How it Works:

  • Automated Scanning: The system constantly scans your pages for "bad language," controversial topics, or content that falls outside of Google’s required content policies.

  • Ad Suppression: To protect your account standing, Ezoic will automatically prevent Google Ads from showing on any page where the AI has detected objectionable content.

  • Reporting: The dashboard provides a 7-day rolling report showing the affected URLs, the specific words found, and how many page views those URLs are receiving.

Steps to Address Flagged Content

1. Review the Flagged URLs

Navigate to the Objectionable Content report to see which pages are currently restricted. Pay close attention to high-traffic pages, as these represent the largest potential revenue loss.

2. Revise the Content

  • Remove Flagged Words: Edit the article to remove the specific words identified by the AI.

  • Check the Context: Sometimes it isn't just a single word, but the overall controversial context of a paragraph. Revise the text to ensure it meets "family-safe" standards.

  • Check Metadata: Ensure objectionable terms aren't in your article titles or meta descriptions, as these can appear in "Recommended Content" widgets and cause flags on multiple other pages.

3. Verification

Once you have updated your site, the URL will remain in the report for 7 days.

  • To verify the fix, adjust the date range in the report to start the day after your changes were made.

  • Note: Data refreshes daily at midday PST for the previous day's activity.

Tips and Best Practices

Proactive Monitoring:

Check this report at least once a week. Catching a single flagged word early can prevent a site-wide policy warning from Google.

JavaScript Integration Benefits:

For sites using JavaScript Integration, the Objectionable Content filter works seamlessly by scanning the rendered page content. This ensures that even content loaded dynamically or via third-party widgets is monitored for compliance.

Don't Forget the Widgets:

Article titles that contain "bad language" can trigger flags on every page where a "Related Posts" widget is shown. Keep your titles clean to protect your entire site's revenue.

Educational Context:

If you are a site dedicated to medical, scientific, or educational topics, certain words may be flagged incorrectly. See the FAQ below for how to handle these instances.

FAQs

What if the words are being flagged in a different language?

Sometimes the system may misinterpret a harmless word in one language as an objectionable word in another. If this happens, please contact Ezoic support at support.ezoic.com.

What if my content is for educational purposes?

If you are discussing sensitive topics for educational or scientific reasons, you can request a whitelist. However, keep in mind that Google’s automated filters may still suppress ads regardless of context. Google’s decision on what is "safe" is ultimately final.
